MYKOOL began in 2012 when his flickering interest in music production rose into a burning passion that continues to spread.
Initially, before MYKOOL got into making his own music he was content with recreating soundtracks from his favourite games and TV shows. It was his curiosity of how to emulate the sounds he had heard and from listening to his favourite artists at the time that he made the leap into making his own material.
He was very experimental in the early ages of his musical hobby. The release of 'Essence', his first Album in July 2013 was to assess his skills in a multitude of genres. The mindset was to please as many crowds as possible, gaining the full attention of the audience but also making music purely for the love of it. Needless to say, the release was a success and gained the attention he was expecting, one track in particular skyrocketed past the rest. One of his most known tracks is ‘Ikiru’, a track from his album ‘Essence’; a piece that includes far-eastern influences. Its calming atmosphere in turn with the pulsing bassline leaves you in a state of trance guided only by the melodic rhythm of the traditional Japanese stringed instrument. It has reached over a million hits and continues to grow, still being used in recent mixes today.
MYKOOL self-released an EP titled 'Monster EP' in November 2013. The style he incorporated into this project is one he has carried throughout his musical path. It was around this time he had been listening to the heavier side of Drum & Bass, aspiring to artists like Mediks and Sub Focus. He also had, and currently still has great influences from his favourite producer Metrik which can be heard throughout his music.
In December of 2014 to the May of 2015, he released three tracks under the label Tasty Records. ‘Taken For Granted’ was a new beginning for MYKOOL as he switched up his style better suited for the direction he wanted to take his sound. This track had influences from the happy hardcore and dance producer, DJ Gammer. He took it upon himself as a challenge to create his own vocals relying on no one but his own resource. This proved successful in his production which gave him more knowledge and independence, opening more doors in the area of creativity. This, along with the hooking melodies and an aggressive pumping bass synth made it a song that Tasty Records was eager to release.
‘Feeling’ soon followed, MYKOOL still experimenting with his more commercial outlook, focusing more on a widespread audience. The vibe of this track couldn’t be described as anything less than ‘uplifting’. It builds you up throughout the song, adding more and more elements as it progresses with blissful piano keys played throughout.
It wasn’t too long after that ‘Momentum’ was released through Tasty Records, completing his hat-trick. MYKOOL wanted to reach further into the mainstream sound of Drum & Bass and appropriately titled exactly what the audience would be feeling when listening to this track. Powerful vocals are sung at the start of the song making sure you’re ready for the ride you’re about to experience. All the elements come together in a rhyme of dynamic movement with no breaks, this track practically breathes energy.
Though MYKOOL likes to keep his music modern and relevant he sometimes has a break and goes back to the style he had when it all started. In May 2015 he released 'Sombre', a liquid drum & bass track which seeps nostalgia. Again, he was pulled by his love for traditional strings and far-eastern instruments, incorporating the Erhu and Koto giving the entire project a unique and soothing sound.
MYKOOL first hit BBC Radio 1 in early 2016 with his energetic drum and bass track ‘Disposed’, a track he initially uploaded back in August 2014 catching the attention and support from ‘Liquicity’, a major Drum & Bass label.
He and Vhana, a progressive house producer and friend of his since 2012 worked together many times but this time they envision to hit the charts of Tasty Records once again. They teamed up with OYNG!, a dance producer that has been showcased on Tasty Records multiple times. Together they made 'Homebound', a feel-good progressive house tune that bounces with positive vibes that elevate the spirit reaching the ears of many, even those of Suicide Sheep which was released in May of 2016.
It was at this point in time where he invested his time away from music production and focused on DJing; for a short time throwing out mixes onto Mixcloud for his fans and also taking part in small parties for his friends. He also took time to revamp his previous album 'Essence', improving the mixdown and mastering of the tracks as well as including two bonus tracks that his earlier fans would recognise, thus releasing 'Essence (Deluxe Edition)' in July 2016 with the appropriate album cover depicting his golden logo with a black velvet background portraying class.
In September 2016 he self-released 'Air', a single track began from his curiosity in delving into a side of Drum & Bass he had never explored; Jungle. It included his own vocals along with catchy guitar riff, a booming bassline and crispy drums giving the song the connotations of jungle music but with his own twist.
In early 2017 he self-released ‘Lost Touch’, an engaging tune layered with vibrant harmonics alongside melancholic daft-punk styled vocals that take you to the definition of electronic music. He explained that is was a sequel of sorts to his previous release 'Taken For Granted' as he adopted a similar style in terms of vocals and energy.
In April of 2017, MYKOOL was invited as a guest on the online drum & bass radio show 'Dose Radio' based in Luton. He mixed back to back with LT Sounds for a 2-hour session. This was marked as his first experience DJing live on the radio which paved new roads for future shows.
Through networking, MYKOOL was able to get in touch with Lacuna Records, a dance music label who took a liking to his song 'Last Chance', originally uploaded to his YouTube as an instrumental mix on October 2013. He saw that it had potential and worked on a VIP Mix that they released in May 2017
One of the DJ's proud moments goes back to September 23rd, 2017 where he had the chance to play at Hospitality In The Park for a short set in the Cuckoo's Nest where he battled another DJ for 1st place - the ultimate test of his mixing skills. The feedback he got from the crowd is one he won't forget, and now he hungers for more! To go out of 2017 with a bang, MYKOOL released 'Tabi' on to his SoundCloud and YouTube, a track that nods at his previous work 'Ikiru', but this time beautifully merging traditional with modern, strings with saw synths, mixing these two styles whilst pulling elements from future bass made this track both the 'calm' and the 'storm'.
MYKOOL's plan for the future is to show off his skills on the decks and play at as many gigs as he can to expand his name whilst simultaneously upping his musical expertise to blow up in the Drum & Bass scene.
